Concept Search

Develop:

1. Site analysis drawing(s) showing building area (footprint), existing structures, vegetation, views, sun exposure, wind exposure, context, grades, water management, utilities, setbacks, pedestrian access, vehicular access, parking, etc.

2. Working site model showing contours, landforms, existing structures, roads, parking, trees, etc.

3. Functional adjacency diagram sketches and study models (on the site model) showing massing and volume implications, stacking implications, etc.

4. Define major challenges relating to site, function, sustainability. Make a list.

Brainstorm:

(with design team -Arch, ID, Landscape, engineers. You could also include a few people from outside the project. -1-2 hours max. Have at least fifty ideas. The more the better at this stage.

1. What general design strategies/concepts address the desired user experience ?

2. What general design strategies/concepts address the critical success factors?

3. What motifs will be recurring throughout the work?

4. What general design strategies/concepts address site issues?

5. What general design strategies/concepts address sustainability issues?

6. What general design strategies/concepts address opportunities for innovation.

Concept Documentation

1. Conceptual study models (On the site model) for each idea/strategy. Use simple materials, found objects, crumpled paper, wire, cardboard, etc. These should be done quickly but convey possibilities for each strategy.

2. Building Parti diagrams/conceptual diagrams for each.

Peer Review (Design team, selected participants)

1. Present all relevant information to peer group:
· Project team
· Project budget and schedule
· Critical success factors
· Program
· Site analysis
·Etc.

Evaluate (using a scorecard) the concepts based on:
· Critical success factors
· Functionality
· Sustainability
· Level of innovation
· Response to site

Select three strategies/concepts (or combinations thereof) for further development.

Concept Development

1. Build multiple study models for the three schemes (on the site model) These should be done quickly.

2. Develop sketches, diagrams, plans

3. Evaluate, select, refine

4. Develop models for presentation

5. Develop presentation boards that show possible materials, vocabularies, for arch, ID, landscape, engineering.

Concept Selection

1. Select preferred direction after team presentation

2. Develop plans, elevations, perspective views
